Windermere House

21 Studley Road, Luton, Bedfordshire, LU3 1BB

Windermere House is a brand new service opened by Nouvita Healthcare in July 2023. It is a recently refurbished 10-bed residential home for adult males, a 15-minute walk from the extensive amenities in Luton town centre.

PAMMS rating: New service, not yet rated

Our service

The new service at Windermere House is based on the same model as the successful service at Winnett Cottage in Stevenage, Hertfordshire.

Our team works closely with the residents, their loved ones, and the multi-disciplinary teams to support them in identifying their individual goals and aspirations. Each resident is assisted in developing a clearly defined plan, which is regularly reviewed to help them achieve positive outcomes.

Residents supported

The Windermere team provides outstanding 24-hour support to individuals with enduring mental health conditions who may have additional forensic histories and substance or alcohol abuse difficulties.

Many of our residents join us from prison or other mental health services, be it in-patient or other residential care homes, and may be subject to MAPPA (multi-agency public protection arrangements), MOJ (Ministry of Justice), CTO (Community Treatment Order) or probation conditions.

All our staff are highly experienced in looking after those with complex mental health needs and substance and alcohol addiction. Whilst residents may be incident-prone, they are not considered to be physically aggressive.

Residents need to have good mobility.

Balancing independence with care

Windermere House provides a vital  ‘stepping stone’ to the community for residents working towards supported or independent living.

We can support residents with a high level of care, including providing personal care and meals and administering prescribed medication. However, our emphasis is on nurturing and encouraging each resident to gain independent life skills, such as learning to manage their medication, cook, gain budgeting skills, general self-care, and help individuals develop a positive outlook on life.

After spending time at Windermere, residents may progress to a supported living service.

Clinical support

Residents of Windermere have access to the community mental health team, and referrals can be made to the community Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy teams.

Activities programme

Residents of Windemere are free to come and go as they please (subject to any CTO or probationary conditions).

Individuals can choose to participate in community-based activities such as day trips, holidays, music groups, personal training, art groups, and gardening groups. They are encouraged to participate in meaningful activities provided by charities such as Mind and YMCA, which offer a full range of therapeutic and leisurely activities that our residents can continue using long after discharge.

We support residents who wish to engage in vocational training, volunteering, or paid work. We help them to identify and apply for appropriate opportunities and accompany them during their early steps until they are confident.

We also help residents organise housing and apply for benefits when ready to move into supported or independent living.

At the house, residents enjoy our large garden and table tennis. They also enjoy in-house art and music workshops and sessions run by Nouvita’s own personal trainer.

Facilities

Windermere House offers a homely environment with six ensuite bedrooms and two shared bathrooms, a comfortable lounge, a modern, open-plan kitchen and dining area, and a good-sized back garden with a summer house and table tennis.

Luton

Fortunate to be located in a residential area close to Luton town centre, we have easy access to many bars and restaurants, shops, and sports and leisure activities.. Not forgetting, of course, the football stadium, which is home to premier league Luton Town F.C.

Luton train station is a five-minute drive or 17-minute walk, providing excellent links to London, Bedford, St Albans, and further afield to Kent and Brighton.

Staff & Training

At Windermere House, we have recruited a highly skilled staff team supported and supplemented by the experienced team at Winnett Cottage.

They have specialist skills to support individuals with mental health conditions, substance misuse, and challenging behaviour. Staff are provided advanced training on an as-needed basis to meet the specific needs of the residents they are supporting.

“The staff care and have taken time to get to know me and my needs and preferences. No one has ever bothered to do that before.”
