Baldock Manor Hospital

London Road, Baldock, Herts, SG7 6ND

Mulberry and Burberry are our acute wards for older adults, usually over 55 years old, who need short-term hospital care to stabilise their mental health.

On Mulberry and Burberry Wards:

Mulberry is exclusively for older men, and Burberry is for older women. They all have a mental health condition that requires dedicated hospital in-patient treatment that is not possible in the community.

Those referred typically present with an exacerbation of their mental health condition, which may include; para-suicidal behaviour, self-neglect, self-harm, and harming others with the need for risk management and a safe environment.  Admission will usually require our skilled clinical team to formulate a clinical diagnosis for new patients, stabilisation of medication after a period of non-concordance, talking therapies, or a mental health occupational therapy assessment.

Route to admission can be via community mental health teams following a referral from A&E, medical wards, community placement breakdown, step down from PICU wards, or where there are escalating risks in the community that the Crisis team can no longer safely support.

The profile of our patients on the Mulberry and Burberry wards means they often have physical as well as mental health care needs. Occupational therapy is, therefore, a vital part of our multi-disciplinary approach, and we can provide hoisting and hospital profile beds to support those with limited mobility.

“I can’t thank you enough for being the BEST hospital that I have experienced during my daughter’s care. You are all an incredible bunch of people-professional yet kind, caring, compassionate and with a sense of humour. Thank you for helping her to start her journey of recovery – she couldn’t have had better help”
