Specialist residential mental health and learning disability care across Hertfordshire and surrounding regions
Nouvita Healthcare provides a network of residential services designed to support adults with mental health conditions, learning disabilities and complex needs to live safely, with dignity, and with a clear pathway towards greater independence.
Across nine residential settings in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Surrey, we offer structured, therapeutic environments that bridge the gap between hospital care and independent living. These services play a vital role within the wider care pathway, supporting individuals who no longer require inpatient treatment but are not yet ready to live independently.
Our residential model is built around stability, progression and outcomes. Every placement is carefully considered to ensure the right environment, the right level of support and the best opportunity for long-term success.
A network of residential services
Our residential provision spans a range of specialist environments, each designed to meet different levels of need and stages of recovery.
Our key residential services include:
- Bromham Road, Bedford
- The Coach House, Hatfield
- Coniston House, Surrey
- Greenwood Cottage, St Albans
- Lansdowne Road, Bedford
- Lavender Lodge, St Albans
- The Leys, Sharnbrooke
- Windermere House, Luton
- Winnett Cottage, Stevenage
These services are complemented by step-down and progression opportunities within our wider pathway, including supported living at Windsor House and nursing care services Howe Dell Manor and Eltisley Manor.
This integrated model enables commissioners and local authorities to place individuals into a setting that not only meets their current needs, but also supports future progression.
Who our residential services support
Our residential services are designed for adults with mild to moderate learning disabilities, autism and/or enduring mental health conditions, as well as individuals with more complex backgrounds including forensic histories or substance misuse.
We commonly support individuals with:
- Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders
- Bipolar disorder and mood disorders
- Personality disorders and trauma-related needs
- Autism and learning disabilities
- Co-existing substance or alcohol misuse
- Forensic histories or involvement with criminal justice pathways
Many individuals are admitted following discharge from hospital, prison or other care settings, where a more structured and supportive environment is required to stabilise their condition and support recovery.
A step-down environment that supports recovery
Residential care within Nouvita is not static. It is an active part of the recovery journey.
Our services are designed to:
- Provide a safe and stable living environment
- Support individuals to manage their mental health and behaviours
- Develop daily living skills and independence
- Encourage engagement with the community
- Enable progression to supported or independent living
For many individuals, residential care acts as a critical stepping stone, reducing the risk of readmission and supporting long-term outcomes.
For example, services such as Windermere House are specifically designed to support individuals transitioning from hospital or custodial settings into the community, with a strong focus on building independence and life skills.
Person-centred care that delivers outcomes
Every individual within our residential services receives a tailored care plan, developed in collaboration with clinicians, commissioners and the individual themselves.
Our approach is grounded in:
- Person-centred care planning
- Therapeutic engagement and structured routines
- Positive risk management
- Skills development and rehabilitation
- Ongoing review and measurable outcomes
We focus not only on stabilisation, but on helping individuals to regain confidence, purpose and control over their lives.
Across our services, residents are supported to:
- Develop independent living skills such as cooking, budgeting and self-care
- Engage in meaningful daily activities and education
- Build social connections and community integration
- Improve emotional regulation and coping strategies
This approach ensures that care is both clinically appropriate and outcome-driven.
A multidisciplinary model of support
Care within our residential services is delivered by experienced teams who understand the complexity of the individuals they support.
This includes:
- Mental health nurses and support workers
- Activity coordinators and rehabilitation staff
- Access to clinical oversight where required
- Collaboration with external professionals and agencies
In services such as Howe Dell Manor, individuals benefit from 24-hour support within a therapeutic environment, with a strong emphasis on progression and independence.
Proven outcomes and positive experiences
The success of our residential services is reflected in both outcomes and feedback.
We consistently see:
Successful step-down from inpatient settings into residential care
Progression from residential care into supported or independent living
Improved stability in mental health and reduced risk behaviours
Increased independence and engagement in daily life
Feedback from commissioners and families highlights the positive environments we create:
“The home has a lovely feeling to it… every staff member seems happy to see a visitor and open to chats.”
“Staff treated patients with kindness, empathy and compassion.”
These outcomes are underpinned by a consistent focus on quality, safety and person-centred care across all services.
Integrated within a wider care pathway
Residential care at Nouvita is part of a broader, integrated pathway that supports individuals from acute crisis through to independent living.
This includes:
- Psychiatric Intensive Care and acute hospital services
- Nursing care for individuals requiring higher levels of support
- Residential care for stabilisation and rehabilitation
- Supported living for those ready to take the next step
This continuity of care allows for smoother transitions, reduced disruption and better long-term outcomes for individuals.
Supporting commissioners and local authorities
We work closely with NHS commissioners, local authorities and placement teams to ensure that each individual is placed in the most appropriate setting.
Our approach supports:
- Timely and appropriate placements
- Reduced delays in discharge from hospital
- Effective risk management
- Clear communication and partnership working
- Value-driven outcomes for commissioning bodies
We understand the pressures on services and aim to provide solutions that are both clinically effective and operationally reliable.
